As we go through different stages and phases of our lives we need mentor(s).
WHO IS A MENTOR?
1. A mentor is an experienced and trusted adviser
2. A mentor is one who teaches, gives counsel/advice, guidance to a less experienced person or Child. A mentor is a counsellor. A mentor can be younger or older than his or her protegee.
DO WE REALLY NEED MENTORS IN OUR JOURNEY OF LIFE?
My answer is YES.
Yes, we need mentors as we journey on our field of endeavours. (Proverbs 11: 14)NKJV says where there is no counsel, the people fall; but in the multitude of counselors there is safety. He or she can be a one on one/ face to face mentor or a distant mentor.
√. A one on one/face to face mentor is that mentor you can reach and have a conversation with, share your fears and worries with, receive counsel, guidance and instructions from one on one.
√. A Distant Mentor is one whom you receive direction, instructions and counsels through their books, tapes, e.t.c.
WHY DO WE NEED A MENTOR/ MENTORS?
1. We need them for growth in our field of endeavours in which they are mentoring you.
2. For Instructions and corrections
3. We need them for Godly counsel & direction. Without counsel plans fail, but with many advisers they succeed. (Pro 15:22)Esv
4. We need them for proper guidance. (Proverbs 11: 14) says where there is no counsel, the people fall; but in the multitude of counselors there is safety.
5. We need them for truth
6. For accountability. You need to be accountable to someone. Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 tells us that Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their labour. For if they fall, one will lift up his fellow. But woe to him who is alone when he falls and has not another to lift him up! This bible verse doesn't only apply in the aspect of marriage, in my opinion it also apply in the field of mentoring.
HOW DO I KNOW THE RIGHT MENTOR TO CHOOSE?
First and foremost you need to have passion for something or for a skill before you can know the right mentor to choose based on your skill and passion for the thing you love doing with ease. Your passion and likeness for your skill will enable you know the right person to choose. One who can truely bring out the best in your in that field of endeavour.
Note: you can also have great mentors also in the area of marriage.
Secondly, your chosen mentor should be someone that has a common ground with you. That is, someone whose view and philosophy align with yours.
Thirdly, your chosen mentor should be someone who is exceling in the chosen career and field which he is being chosen to mentor you on.
WHAT DO I OWE MY MENTOR?
As a protegee, you owe your mentor
1. A listening ear,
2 An obedient heart,
3. Availability: You owe your mentor the ability to be available for counsel.
4. You owe your mentor feedback on the given task and assignment in which you sought counsel for
5. The ability to adhere to correction and heed to counsel/advice and instructions.
DUTIES OF A MENTOR
1. Duty to protect your protegee/mentee
2. Duty to be available when counsel is needed
3. Duty to speak the truth
4. Duty to give right Godly counsel
5. Duty to allow protegee make their choices or take his or her decisions after counsel has been given.
6. Duty to follow-up on mentee's task.
